A CHERISHED LANDMARK AMONG SEGIUN HISTORIC VENUES
The Abbott House was built in 1895 by Julius M. Abbott and his wife, Fannie May Humphreys. Today the stately gabled and turreted home, which now stands along one of Seguin’s busiest thoroughfares, was originally part of a large rural farm owned by Fannie May’s parents, Dr and Mrs. Benjamin Wayne Humphrey’s, a pioneer Texas physician.
Julius Abbott heralded from Alabama, and for a time he worked in the Beaumont area where he was involved in the famous Spindletop Oil Field development. He also worked for the railroad and helped build the McQueeny Dam.
The residence, a three story, Victorian Queen Ann mansion, featuring a full basement, sweeping verandas, a distinctive turret, gabled windows, and sunburst fan detail on the front of the house, was built for $2,700. This was considered a large sum of money in 1895. The large palm tree shaded lot now holds an expansive courtyard with fire-ring, granite bar top, gardens and gazebo.
The house retains an interesting original feature: Large double doors leading down a sloped ramp into the basement creating a space for a horse and buggy carriage to be stored.
Many of the homes intricate and ornate original features have been lovingly preserved over the years. Such features include the hand inlaid parquet flooring, the beautiful arched staircase ceiling and massive columns off the foyer, towering 12 ft ceilings, 11 inch baseboards, 4 working fireplaces with detailed gold overlay surrounds, 5 panel solid wood doors with airy transoms on top (all with original decorative brass hardware), 43 windows (many of which are floor to ceiling with original 1800s glass panes), 6 original pocket doors entering two parlors, 7 porches, a hidden servants staircase, and much more, making this one of Seguin’s finest and most unique historic homes.

Built in 1895, The Abbott House is considered one of Seguin's premier historical landmarks.
A recent careful and loving restoration was recently completed and involved the creation of elaborate hand painted ceiling adornment, pressed tin ceiling in foyer, powder room and kitchen, custom cabinetry, custom hand made draperies, walls with water color decorative faux finishes, refinished original wood floors, custom crafted coffered ceilings in the master suite and living room, decorative crown molding, five restored 1908-1918 ceiling fans, several 1800 era stained glass windows, hand inlaid wood and travertine style tile flooring in kitchen and decorative mosaic tiles in the kitchen and baths. A porch as been added with an eastern exposure on the second story.
Adorned with period furnishings and precious antiques, such as grandfather clock in foyer, a fully restored baby grand piano dating to 1900 in parlor, 4 poster bed upstairs, stunning Victorian bar and much more. The home is now the pride of Seguin and a place to be shared with family and friends.
Together, Paul and Judi began the restoration of this old home in 2009 and ensured the careful preservation of it’s timeless historic features.
